Julia Fiona Roberts was born in Atlanta on October 28, 1967 in the home of Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts. She is the fourth Roberts generation to reside in Atlanta starting with her grandfather who was a farmer, John Pendleton Roberts. Her father was a young man when he became interested in theater. When he was an undergraduate at Emory University, he performed in a variety of productions in Atlanta. In 1953, he enlisted in the Air Force and while stationed at Biloxi in Mississippi, he appeared in productions with Betty Lou Bredemus. The couple got married in 1955 and their first child Eric Anthony was born in 1956. Walter was a student at Tulane University, New Orleans Louisiana. The year 1957 was the year they were discharged from the air force and Walter started his education at Tulane University. Walter started his work at Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio in 1960. In 1964, Walter together with Betty Lou began production on a local Saturday morning children's TV show titled Bum Bum and His Buddies which they funded by themselves. The following year they started the Actors and Writers Workshop which operated for a period of six years. They welcomed in 1965 two children to the family: Lelisa Billingsley along with Julia Billingsley.
